One symbol is used to indicate a vowel that is not directly preceded by a consonant, such as at the beginning of a word or after another vowel. The syllabic ᑎ represents the sounds ti, while ᑐ represents tu and ᑕ represents ta. Rotating or flipping a symbol changes the vowel. The system works as follows: the shape of each symbol indicates a consonant, or lack thereof, while the orientation of the symbol indicates the vowels a, i or u.
